Project Overview

This project is a five-year project, starting in April 2024 and running until March 2029, and it aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, specifically methane, from paddy fields by implementing a water management system in Cambodia's West Tonle Sap Lake region. The collaboration involves Japanese and Cambodian institutions, with primary contributions from the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC).

Output 1: Establishing a Water Management System for Methane Emission Reduction

  • Water Resource Management: Conducted field surveys to understand the outline of the Pursat River basin and obtained hydrological data from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MoWRAM).
  • ICT-Based Irrigation Systems: Installed water level gauges, and conducting procurement of equipment for automatic water level observation devices is in progress.
  • Decision Support for Farmers: Conducted field surveys and initiated the development of an ICT-based decision support application for farmers to manage methane reduction.

Output 2: Developing Methane Emission Estimation Methods

  • Tower and Drone Monitoring: Selected candidate sites for the tower observatory and began procurement of monitoring instruments. Evaluated drone-mounted CH4 sensors, and the procurement process is ongoing.
  • Remote Sensing for Emission Reduction: Utilized satellite and drone imagery to monitor field conditions, with ongoing analysis to detect plant drought stress and water level variations in paddy fields.

Output 3: Establishing a Framework for Sustainable Methane Reduction

  • Database Development: Continued collecting and compiling microdata on farm households and paddy fields for the rainy season of 2024.
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): Shared the basic concept of LCA with stakeholders and identified data sources for fertilizers and pesticides.

Carbon Credits Initiative: Initiated a survey to identify target farmers and shared the basic concept of carbon credit project formation with stakeholders.
