PhD in Veterinary Science

The Doctoral Program in Veterinary Science aims to advance knowledge and scientific inquiry by encouraging students to engage in research to address complex challenges in animal health, infectious disease control, zoonotic diseases, food safety, animal production systems, and One Health. At present, the doctoral program offers seven major specializations: Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Epidemiology, Veterinary Public Health, Companion Animal Medicine, Production Animal Medicine, Wildlife Medicine, and Veterinary Parasitology. The program has a duration of three years (six semesters) and requires a minimum of 62 credits. The program structure comprises a total of 62 credits, which are divided into four main components:

  • Basic major subjects (6 credits)
  • Core major subjects (8 credits)
  • Seminars and conferences (6 credits)
  • Dissertation proposal and defense (42 credits)

Structure of the doctoral program in each major field

  • Veterinary Pathology
    • Semester I: A total of 11 credits with 4 courses; Advanced biostatistics in veterinary research (3 credits), Advanced research methodology and scientific writing in veterinary (3 credits), Advanced clinical pathology (3 credits) and Advanced veterinary diagnostic equipment (2 credits)
    • Semester II: A total of 9 credits including; Take a course with supervisor (3 credits) and Dissertation proposal defending (6 credits)
    • Semester III: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation progress I (6 credits)
    • Semester IV: A total of 18 credits including; Dissertation progress II (6 credits), Participation or present in local international seminar (3 credits) and Publish paper I (9 credits)
    • Semester V: At total of 12 credits including; Publish paper II (9 credits) and Presentation in local/international conference (3 credits)
    • Semester VI: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation defending (6 credits)
  • Veterinary Epidemiology
    • Semester I: A total of 11 credits with 4 courses; Advanced biostatistics in veterinary research (3 credits), Advanced research methodology and scientific writing in veterinary (3 credits), Advanced veterinary epidemiology (3 credits) and Advanced veterinary diagnostic equipment (2 credits)
    • Semester II: A total of 9 credits including; Take a course with supervisor (3 credits) and Dissertation proposal defending (6 credits)
    • Semester III: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation progress I (6 credits)
    • Semester IV: A total of 18 credits including; Dissertation progress II (6 credits), Participation or present in local international seminar (3 credits) and Publish paper I (9 credits)
    • Semester V: At total of 12 credits including; Publish paper II (9 credits) and Presentation in local/international conference (3 credits)
    • Semester VI: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation defending (6 credits)
  • Veterinary Public Health
    • Semester I: A total of 11 credits with 4 courses; Advanced biostatistics in veterinary research (3 credits), Advanced research methodology and scientific writing in veterinary (3 credits), Advanced zoonotic and emerging disease (3 credits) and Antimicrobial resistance (2 credits)
    • Semester II: A total of 9 credits including; Take a course with supervisor (3 credits) and Dissertation proposal defending (6 credits)
    • Semester III: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation progress I (6 credits)
    • Semester IV: A total of 18 credits including; Dissertation progress II (6 credits), Participation or present in local international seminar (3 credits) and Publish paper I (9 credits)
    • Semester V: At total of 12 credits including; Publish paper II (9 credits) and Presentation in local/international conference (3 credits)
    • Semester VI: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation defending (6 credits)
  • Veterinary Companion Animal Medicine
    • Semester I: A total of 11 credits with 4 courses; Advanced biostatistics in veterinary research (3 credits), Advanced research methodology and scientific writing in veterinary (3 credits), Advanced small animal medicine (3 credits) and Advanced veterinary diagnostic equipment (2 credits)
    • Semester II: A total of 9 credits including; Take a course with supervisor (3 credits) and Dissertation proposal defending (6 credits)
    • Semester III: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation progress I (6 credits)
    • Semester IV: A total of 18 credits including; Dissertation progress II (6 credits), Participation or present in local international seminar (3 credits) and Publish paper I (9 credits)
    • Semester V: At total of 12 credits including; Publish paper II (9 credits) and Presentation in local/international conference (3 credits)
    • Semester VI: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation defending (6 credits)
  • Farm Animal Medicine
    • Semester I: A total of 11 credits with 4 courses; Advanced biostatistics in veterinary research (3 credits), Advanced research methodology and scientific writing in veterinary (3 credits), Advanced farm animal medicine (3 credits) and Advanced veterinary diagnostic equipment (2 credits)
    • Semester II: A total of 9 credits including; Take a course with supervisor (3 credits) and Dissertation proposal defending (6 credits)
    • Semester III: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation progress I (6 credits)
    • Semester IV: A total of 18 credits including; Dissertation progress II (6 credits), Participation or present in local international seminar (3 credits) and Publish paper I (9 credits)
    • Semester V: At total of 12 credits including; Publish paper II (9 credits) and Presentation in local/international conference (3 credits)
    • Semester VI: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation defending (6 credits)
  • Wildlife Medicine
    • Semester I: A total of 11 credits with 4 courses; Advanced biostatistics in veterinary research (3 credits), Advanced research methodology and scientific writing in veterinary (3 credits), Advanced wildlife medicine (3 credits) and Advanced veterinary diagnostic equipment (2 credits)
    • Semester II: A total of 9 credits including; Take a course with supervisor (3 credits) and Dissertation proposal defending (6 credits)
    • Semester III: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation progress I (6 credits)
    • Semester IV: A total of 18 credits including; Dissertation progress II (6 credits), Participation or present in local international seminar (3 credits) and Publish paper I (9 credits)
    • Semester V: At total of 12 credits including; Publish paper II (9 credits) and Presentation in local/international conference (3 credits)
    • Semester VI: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation defending (6 credits)
  • Veterinary Pathology

    • Semester II: A total of 9 credits including; Take a course with supervisor (3 credits) and Dissertation proposal defending (6 credits)
    • Semester III: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation progress I (6 credits)
    • Semester IV: A total of 18 credits including; Dissertation progress II (6 credits), Participation or present in local international seminar (3 credits) and Publish paper I (9 credits)
    • Semester V: At total of 12 credits including; Publish paper II (9 credits) and Presentation in local/international conference (3 credits)
    • Semester VI: A total of 6 credits including; Dissertation defending (6 credits)

Note: Students who hold an equivalent master’s degree are required to complete a total minimum of 71 credits (62 credits for the doctoral program and an additional 9 credits of supplementary courses according to their specialization), such as:

  • Veterinary diagnostic imaging (3 credits)
  • Veterinary surgery of body systems (4 credits)
  • Applied veterinary microbiology (2 credits)
  • Applied veterinary parasitology and entomology (2 credits)
  • Applied veterinary pathology (2 credits)
  • General pathology (3 credits)
  • Veterinary medicine of body system (3 credits)
  • Veterinary systematic pathology (3 credits)
  • Veterinary epidemiology (3 credits)
